Rheumatic fever is still common in children

GREAT TEACHER Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra, Prof. dr. Abdullah Afif Siregar, SpA (K), SpJP (K), said, rheumatic fever (DR) are still common in children in developing countries, particularly the children aged 5-15 years.

"In 1994 an estimated worldwide there are 12 million people with DR and rheumatic heart disease (PJR) and about 3 million have heart failure and require repeated hospitalization at the hospital," he said in Medan, on Saturday (12 / 4).

It said the inaugural speech himself into a Permanent Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, USU. Abdullah added that the prevalence in developing countries ranged from 7.9 to 12.6 per 1,000 children school and relatively stable.

He said the latest data on the prevalence of DR in Indonesia for the year 1981-1990 from 0.3 to 0.8 were found among 1000 school children and much lower compared with other developing countries. "Statistics hospitals in developing countries indicated that about 10-35 per cent and heart disease patients who go into hospital is a patient of DR and PJR," he said.

He further said the data coming from developing countries show the mortality due to DR and PJR is still a problem and there were acute deaths due to DR in children and young adults. In developed countries the incidence and prevalence of DR PJR were much reduced and not even be found anymore, but lately in the report showed an increase in some developed countries.


 

"It is reported in several places in the United States in the mid and late 1980s increased the incidence of DR, as well as on Aboriginal populations in Australia and New Zealand," he said.

Rheumatic fever is a systemic inflammatory process caused by the bacteria streptococcus B - hemolitius group A that attacks the throat channel. It is an autoimmune reaction and most often occurs at the age of 5-15 years. The symptoms are fever accompanied by inflammation of the heart, inflammation of the joints (joint pain that moves mainly large joints), redness on the skin bumps skin and uncontrolled body movements, usually occurs in children aged 10-14 years.
